Laser distance measure

There are more than just 5 Laser Distance Meters or Measures on the market, but here are 5 of the more popular models.  All the models below have a selection of the most popular features found at this price point and are ideal for indoor measuring applications. For a general guide on laser distance measures see post HERE.

Future reviews will cover models with Bluetooth and another will cover outdoor models with optical/video targeting and intelligent indirect measurements.

Key selling point is the automatic end-piece which means you can measure from corner to corner in a window or door frame to check square.  Second selling point is the Leica Disto’s reputation for extreme reliability and build quality.

Key selling point for the Bosch GLM 40 is price, yes some of the features such as half the range and no auto end piece compared to the Disto but for the price it has a good amount of features and so makes a great little unit.

Dewalt DW03050

  • 2 line Display
  • Surface area, Volume, Continuous Measurement, Pythagoras etc
  • 5 measurement Memory
  • IP65 water/dust resistant and 2m Drop tested.
  • Range up to 50M
  • Accuracy 1.5mm
  • Warranty 3 years (registration required)

Note in the video above its the first laser measure featured.  Key selling point Dewalt toughness, water resistance and drop tested.  All the regular features and good value for money.  The video somewhat exaggerates use outdoors, particularly you would be lucky to pick out the laser dot on the top of that roof line even on a cloudy day.  All the laser measures in this review have a class2 laser so have very similar intensity or brightness under similar lighting conditions.

Hilti PD 5

  • 2 line Display
  • Continuous Measurement
  • 2 measurement Memory
  • Range up to 100M
  • Accuracy 1.5mm
  • Warranty 2 years, Hilti lifetime Service (registration required)

The PD 5 is the first of the three laser measurers in the above video.  Its features are very limited, to say the least, but its key selling points are first its a Hilti and many swear by they build quality and back up service and secondly its shape make it more handy as a pocket device.  Finally it has the best range out of the 5 at 100m.  It is very expensive though for what it does and other manufactures make similar shaped and featured devices for less e.g. Leica D110 (E7100i us model) which even has bluetooth and Imex Bullseye 30 (Australia).
